Digital Skills - Assignments
Self-Portrait Project
You have three options for Monday:
1. If you have a digital camera take a series of self portraits of yourself.
2. If you do not have a digital camera, you may use a 35mm film camera, but you must have prints or a CD with the images ready by the first Monday of class.
3. You can also use my camera to have your photos taken by others in the class.
Whatever option you choose, think about capturing interesting shadows and lighting. Thinks about the different angles and compositions of your images. Also, think about expressions you would like to convey.
Pattern Project
For this project you have created two symbols
from object you brought to class. Using these symbols build 12 pattern studies
into interesting compositions. Think of creating windows for your compositions
rather than boxes.
Using Illustrator, create 8"x 8" compositions using the following
criteria as guidelines:
2 compositions using contrast of size as the main focus of the composition.
2 studies with movement or direction as the dominate principle
2 studies with space as the main principle (you can use size, overlapping, arrangement,
and/or foreshortening here)
2 studies with gradations (size, shape, density, etc)
1 study with anomaly as the key feature
1 study with rhythm as the dominate principle
One week after the critique for this project, you will submit the best of your
two symbols mounted nicely on black foam core.
You will also submit your 3 favorite (most interesting, greatest, best) pattern
studies mounted the same way.
Remember when mounting these to make your work look important. Even these "studies" can be wonderful pieces if you treat them as important.
The Documentary Project
Step one:
Choose a public place you find interesting.
Document it in photographically.
As you are taking your photos, think about how to document the details as well
as the feel of the place.
When the photos are taken, sit and listen for several minutes.
Write down the sounds you hear, the thoughts you think and the emotions you
have about the site.
Step two:
